Generation Launches Wiener GTV
Generation, known for understated products, is bringing you style and elegance carried throughout the decades. With great excitement, we introduce to you, our new iconic product range by Wiener GTV that we have just launched. Generation; an established interior design business that has grown from an exclusive furniture showroom into a cutting-edge retail store with a fully-imported selection of exclusive Italian and other European brands, is pleased to announce the addition of GTV into the established international design collection in their Hyde Park, Johannesburg store. The design store carries the brands; De Padova, Lampe Gras, and Seletti - all whose histories are based on crafted luxury dating back as far as 1921.
The vision behind the addition of the GTV brand is to enable Generation to infiltrate into the Commercial and Hospitality Sector, referred to as the Contract division. This will be focused more on projects of a larger scale, in collaboration with our existing and new clientele - Architects and Interior Designers/Decorators.
Generation prides itself on being a discerning portal for global design in South Africa and aims to change the way people think about design by providing an enriching, inspiring and forward-thinking forum for them to realize their passion for design, which so effortlessly marries the look and feel of GTV products (click here).
Generation’s founder and well-known interior designer, Julia Day believes that GTV’s foundation and design ethos strongly resonates with that of Generation, and thus, has carefully chosen various GTV pieces in tones of natural and raw textures that communicate a sense of traditional South African.
Gebrüder Thonet (click here), the founder of GTV (1796-1871) in 1853, and renowned furniture designer, who collaborated with his five sons, abandoned the more traditional technique of glued lamellar wood in favour of the industrial chemical – mechanical steam bent process. This innovation led him to begin producing wooden furniture, presenting a collection of elegant, yet practical designs that could be manufactured on a larger scale. They were the most successful manufacturers of furniture in the industrial age. The crafted process by keeping very high quality standards has encouraged the product circulation at an International level, starting from Viennese historical locals, where the Thonet chairs became the most typical café chairs. GTV products appeared in the most refined hotels, restaurants and theatres all over the world, which deals with the big international supplies and looks for solutions able to fulfil the requirements of the most varied interiors. “GTV is open and looking to the future, without, however, leaving the values and experience of the past behind.”
The business was later rebuilt by his descendants, including his great-grandson Fritz Jakob Thonet as well as Fritz Jakob’s children, Evamarie Thonet and Richard Thonet. They finally built their own production site in Friedberg in 1962, and in 1976 the Austrian business changed its name from Gebrüder Thonet to its existing name Gebrüder Thonet Vienna (GTV), which forms a great part of European history that merges tradition and innovation, renewing its style lines through continuous project research. The traditional and modern No1 and No14 chairs, along with many more of Thonet’s classics are edits work, creating continuity and renewal. These designs boast a precious detail that certifies authenticity, originality and quality in stable balance between manufacturing and high-level craftsmanship. Functionality and lightness are the synthesis of GTV collections, which have always distinguished themselves in the most refined places.
GTV has won an Elle Déco International Design, and Wallpaper award. Always truly original, the company has stayed true to their roots of producing and manufacturing high-quality design.
